Everyone wants to know what brow shape is trending this year. But the conversation clients are bringing into our salons has changed. The question isn't just "what should my brows look like?" anymore. It's "what is this service actually doing to my brow hair over time?"
It's a fair question. If you're getting your brows waxed every three to four weeks, or booking a lamination every couple of months, that adds up over the years. And the answer is different depending on which service you're talking about.
At our salons in Santa Monica, Brentwood, and Austin, we talk about this with clients all the time. Brow health isn't something that should be an afterthought. It should be part of the plan from day one. So let's get into what actually happens to your brow hair when you commit to each of these services long term.
Eyebrow Waxing and What It Does Over the Years
Eyebrow waxing removes hair from the root using warm wax. That's the whole idea. Pull the hair out completely so it takes longer to grow back compared to shaving or trimming. Most people see regrowth around the three to four week mark, though that varies depending on your individual hair growth cycle.
Here's what happens when you wax consistently over months and years: the hair follicle gets weaker. Not damaged, just weaker. Each time the hair is pulled from the root, the follicle has to rebuild that hair from scratch. Over time, many people notice that the hair grows back finer, softer, and sometimes sparser than it used to be.
For most clients, that's actually a good thing. You're getting your brows shaped anyway. Having less regrowth between appointments and thinner, softer hair when it does grow back is a bonus. Your appointments stay cleaner and your brows hold their shape longer.
The one thing to be mindful of with long term waxing is making sure you're only removing hair you actually want gone. Wax covers an area, not a single hair. That's why working with a skilled brow artist matters so much. You need someone who understands brow mapping and shaping and knows which hairs to keep. If the wrong hairs get pulled repeatedly over months, those follicles may not bounce back.
Eyebrow Threading and the Long Game
Eyebrow threading takes a completely different approach. A twisted cotton thread catches individual hairs and pulls them from the root, one row at a time. No wax, no chemicals, no heat. Just thread and technique.
In terms of long term effects on hair growth, threading is considered the gentler option. Because the thread targets individual hairs without touching the surrounding skin, there's less trauma to the area overall. The hair still gets pulled from the root, so you'll see a similar growth timeline of two to four weeks before regrowth appears. But threading doesn't have the same gradual thinning effect that waxing does because there's no repeated adhesion to the skin or follicle disruption beyond the pull itself.
This makes threading a strong choice for anyone who wants to maintain their natural brow density over the long run. It's also the go-to for clients with sensitive or acne-prone skin, since there are no products being applied to the skin at all.
The trade off? Threading requires real precision from the artist. A great threader can sculpt your brows beautifully and keep every hair that needs to stay. But the skill ceiling is high, which is why we invest so heavily in training our threading artists.
Brow Lamination and Hair Health Over Time
Brow lamination works differently than waxing or threading because it's not removing hair at all. Instead, it uses a chemical process to relax the bonds inside each brow hair, allowing the hairs to be brushed into a new direction and set in place. Think of it like a gentle perm for your brows.
The results look incredible. Fuller, fluffier brows that stay styled for six to eight weeks without any product. But since lamination involves chemical processing, the question of long term effects comes up a lot.
Here's what we tell our clients: lamination works on the hair shaft, not the follicle. It doesn't affect how your hair grows or whether it grows back. New hairs come in with your natural texture every time. The temporary restructuring fades as the hair grows out and eventually sheds naturally.
The Key to Healthy Lamination
Spacing matters. The industry standard is a minimum of six to eight weeks between lamination appointments. Doing it more frequently than that is where problems like dryness, brittleness, and potential breakage show up. When you give your brows enough recovery time and follow up with nourishing oils or serums between appointments, lamination is absolutely safe to do on a regular basis.
The shift in 2026 toward softer, more natural lamination results is actually great news for brow health. Shorter processing times, gentler formulas, and that soft flexible finish everyone wants now puts less stress on the hair compared to the extreme, glossy laminations that were popular a couple of years ago. We've seen this firsthand with how we approach lamination at all three of our locations.
So Which Service Is "Best" for Your Brow Health?
There's no single right answer because it depends entirely on your brows and your goals. Here's how to think about it:
Waxing
Best for clients who want clean, defined shaping and don't mind (or actually prefer) that their regrowth gradually becomes finer and lighter over time. Ideal if you have thick, coarse brow hair and want less maintenance between visits.
Threading
Best for clients who want to preserve their full natural brow density long term. Also the better choice if you have sensitive or reactive skin, or if you're using products like retinol that make waxing risky.
Lamination
Best for clients who want their existing brows to look fuller and stay styled without daily effort. Not a hair removal service, so it works alongside waxing or threading rather than replacing them. Safe long term when spaced properly.
Most of our regular clients combine services. A wax or thread to shape up, followed by lamination and a tint for the full effect. When everything is done by experienced hands and at the right intervals, your brows stay healthy, strong, and looking their best year after year.
What We Recommend at The Brow Fixx
Brow health starts with paying attention. Notice how your hair responds after each appointment. Ask your brow artist if your hair texture has changed. Use a nourishing brow serum or oil between services. And don't skip appointments thinking that gives your brows a "break." Consistent maintenance at the right intervals is actually better for your brows than sporadic visits where everything has grown out of control and needs a heavy cleanup.
If you're not sure what your brows need, that's what we're here for. Our artists assess your brow hair, your skin, and your history before recommending a service. We'd rather steer you toward the right service for your brows than upsell you on something that doesn't make sense for your situation.
